A good friend of mine has had chronic acid reflux
heartburn for as long as I have known her. She is also a
smoker and I mean a heavy smoker, burning up to a
dozen cigarettes a day. I have told her many many
times that the by products of smoking cause the lower
esophageal sphincter muscle to become relaxed
thereby letting acid to reflux up esophagus from her
stomach. Sometimes it was so bad that she developed
a chronic sore throat and hoarsness  condition that
lasted for weeks. Frequently she had to sleep sitting up
right in a chair to get any rest at all. About six weeks
ago she finally made a serious effort to quit smoking.
She is using every tool available to keep the monkey off
her back.

About two weeks ago she called me to tell me she has
been acid reflux heartburn free for about a week. This
apparently was the longest period with out heartburn
symptoms in at least 5 years. The best news was that
she could now sleep in a bed like a normal person. As a
result of getting more rest she was feeling very much
better.

Even her job performance had improved as well. I told
her that was because she no longer spent so much
time outside of the office smoking. Of course I had to
tell her several times "I told you so" just to rub it in and
to make sure she does not backslide on the smoking.
She says quitting smoking was and is the hardest thing
she has done in her life, but she is determined to stay
clean and smoke free.

Her acid reflux symptoms even diminished more when
she began exercising. Prior to quitting smoking she did
not have the energy to attempt any fitness program.
She was unable to rest due to the constant acid reflux
at night and the resulting sore throat even complicated
the situation further. Since she was in such poor
physical condition we had her start using an elliptical
trainer which protects your joints, bones and muscle
while giving you a total upper and lower body workout.
The change was dramatic. She was unable to conduct a
10 minute exercise routine during the first week. After
using the elliptical machine for just 3 weeks she was
able to complete the basic 20 minute workout program.
The change in her physical appearance was just as
dramatic. She basically went from looking like the
walking dead to normal in terms of skin color and facial
muscle tone. Her hard work and determination is
paying off.

All in all she was very lucky in that she did not develop
a more serious acid reflux related condition such as
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or cancer.
Ignoring the symptoms of acid reflux heartburn can
lead to permanent or life threatening condition. If you
have a chronic heartburn related problem you should
seek help from your family medical professional. You
can also make changes in your lifestyle that will reduce
or stop your symptoms of acid reflux heartburn.
Basically is all up to you.
