There are certain foods that a person with GERD or
gastroesophageal should avoid. Therefore, there is
a need to follow a
diet for acid reflux. The idea is to
avoid too much acid secretion in the stomach. Too
much acid in the stomach would likely to result in an
acid reflux.

First tip is to eat more frequently, more or less four
to five times a day, but with smaller food amounts. A
small quantity of food intake means that the
stomach would require less work to digest the
foods. This would also mean that the stomach
would only need less acid requirement for
digestion. Also, foods that are high in complex
carbohydrates like pasta, rice and breads are
recommended to be included in the
diet for acid
reflux
. These foods are usually easy for the stomach
to digest. Like many other diets, meals with high fat
content are also not advisable. Since they remain in
the stomach for a longer period, there will be a need
to secrete more stomach acid.

When it comes to fruits, the most recommended are
pineapples and papayas. They help balance the
acidity in the stomach. Bananas and apples are also
safe to eat. Green beans, carrots, and broccoli are
recommended to include in the diet. Alcoholic
beverages, carbonated drinks and coffees should
be avoided as far as beverages are concerned. Only
mineral water is advisable to drink. The inclusion of
meats in the diet should depend on how they are
prepared. It is not advisable to include nugget style
chicken and Buffalo wings. Chicken breast or fresh
fish that is prepared without added fat are safe to be
added in the
diet for acid reflux.

There are also some desserts that are not advisable
to be eaten during an the development of a
diet for
acid reflux
. Two of which are peppermint and
chocolate. Ice creams can be consumed as long as
they are low in fat. Also, people with GERD should
avoid eating spicy foods. In dairy products,
consume only those items that are low in fat or fat
free.

For the diet to be effective, it is also necessary for
the person with acid reflux symptoms to change
some habits. Smoking should be avoided, or better
yet, eliminated. Nicotine that is found in cigarettes
weakens a special kind of muscle in the lower part
of the esophagus. This muscle functions to keep
acids from the stomach from going back up the
throat. Chewing gums should also be avoided
during a
diet for acid reflux. It is a must to avoid too
much air from entering the stomach. If there is
plenty of air inside the stomach, it is likely that we
will regurgitate.

An important thing to remember to have an effective
diet for acid reflux is to keep a food diary. You
should be cautious of what you eat, how much you
eat, and when eat. Also, bear in mind that it is
important that you follow your diet consistently.
