Acid Reflux, Heartburn Cure
Orange peel is being touted as a cure for light to
moderate acid reflux heartburn symptoms. Orange
peel supplements have been around for sometime
and have even been used in cancer research. Many
people have been taking large amounts of over the
counter antacids medications and are looking for an
effective alternative. 90 percent of all over the counter
heartburn medications have warnings and notices
that they are not to be taken over a long period of
time. Some research has indicated that these over
the counter medications if taken for extended periods
may have long-term health consequences.

The key ingredient in orange peel extract is the
chemical compound d-limonene. d-Limonene
(1-methyl-4-isopropenyl-1-cyclohexene) is a liquid
with a lemonlike odor. It is a major constituent in
several citrus oils (orange, lemon, mandarin, lime,
and grapefruit) and is present in a number of other
essential oils, as well. d-Limonene is included on the
Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Generally
Recognized as Safe List and is approved for use by
the FDA as a food additive (Opdyke, 1975).
d-Limonene has a boiling point of 176 C and a vapor
pressure of <3 mmHg at 14 C. d-Limonene is used
primarily as a flavor and fragrance ingredient.

The EPA has done some testing on mammals using
d-linonene. They found that ingesting this chemical
at levels less than 1000mg had few if any side affects.
Most commons side effects of higher doses included
birth defects, bone and skeletile probems. Apparently
there are no long term studies on the effects of taking
orange peel extract (d-limonene). Orange peel extract
has been studied to some degree as to its
effectiveness in reducing acid reflux heartburn.
Researchers do not fully understand the relationship
between orange peel extract and its affects on acid
reflux heartburn.

It is theorized that orange peel extract acts as a
surfactant thereby assisting in the peristalsis of the
esophagus. It is also thought that it also moves the
food in the stomach into the intestinal track more
rapidly thereby reducing the amount of acid
produced by the stomach. It is obvious that more
research needs to be conducted before we fully
understand how orange peal extract works to reduce
the symptoms of acid reflux heartburn.

Orange peel extract was used in some short term
studies to determine its effectiveness in reducing
acid reflux heartburn symptoms. Published results of
one such study indicate that taking 1000 mg of
orange peel extract every other day for a period of
more than 20 days did in fact reduce the symptoms
of people who were suffering from mild to moderate
acid reflux heartburn. It was noted that the orange
peel extract used in this study contained a high
concentration of the chemical d-limonene (<98.5%).
The study indicates that approximately 90 percent of
all of the test subjects had a significant reduction in
their acid reflux symptoms after 14 days of treatment.
Not only did it reduce the severity of acid reflux
symptoms but also the frequency of attacks.

It goes without saying that orange peel extract will
not cure severe acid reflux heartburn or GERD
(gastroesophageal reflux disease). However it may
with a change in lifestyle help prevent mild to
moderate heartburn suffers from developing a more
serious acid reflux heartburn condition. One must
remember self diagnosis of any medical condition is
a recipe for disaster. It is always prudent to consult
with a qualified medical professional whenever you
have a chronic digestive problem. What may seem
like ordinary acid reflux heartburn may be something
far worse including cancer or heart disease.
