Most people realize that GERD or gastroesophageal
reflux disease is a serious condition that left
untreated can lead to a more serious condition.
However a great number of people who suffer from
this disease fail to take any actions that will lead to
a cure. This head in the sand attitude guarantees
that you are going to have a serious problem in the
future.  Many people with this disease have not
even consulted a doctor about their condition.

Even If the sufferer is under the care of a physician
they frequently do not follow medical advice.
Doctors frequently prescribe a
GERD Diet, changes
in life style and medications in an effort heal their
esophagus and reduce their symptoms. Of these
prescriptions the only one that is normally followed
is the taking of medications. Initially the GERD
sufferer will attempt life style and diet changes but
soon lose heart and give up.

Few people realize that their
GERD will not be cured
without a serious commitment to change their life
style and live on a
GERD Diet. Recent finding by the
Veterans Administration show that the most
important part of any GERD diet is to remove fats
from the diet. Obesity was found to be directly
linked to
GERD. Lowering  cholesterol and eating a
low fat diet were found to be critical in reducing
GERD and its symptoms. Studies have shown that
simply losing weight reduce
GERD symptoms in 59
percent of the people studied.

Additional studies have also shown that a
combination of diet and exercise significantly
reduced
GERD symptoms over a period of 3
months. In most cases the reduction of symptoms
is permanent. It stands to reason that you will lose
weight more rapidly by exercising however there
are more benefits to exercise. Exercise has been
found to help the body digest food more efficiently.
The chemical changes that come as the result
exercise also reduce pain and discomfort
associated with
GERD symptoms. An additional
benefit of using an exercise program to treat your
GERD comes in the form of reduced medications.
Many people find that they can reduce the amount
of both prescription and over the counter
GERD
and
acid reflux heartburn medications as a result of
exercise.

We have occasioned to find people who are
suffering from
GERD and that are at or under their
ideal weight. However most of these people do not
participate in any regular program of exercise.
Anecdotal information shows that when these
GERD sufferers begin a program of daily exercise
their symptoms are reduced. It is important to
realize that 30 minutes of intense exercise in the
form of walking will have significant benefits. This
walking should be at rapid pace to achieve the
desired effect. Any exercise effort beyond this effort
will also be beneficial but to a lesser degree.

Life style changes that include diet and exercise are
a very important part of any effective
GERD
treatment program. Check with your physician to
assure that the diet and exercise program you are
considering is appropriate for you.
